About Real Sociedad
Youth and pride, pride and youth. There is a special breed that constantly grow in the city of san Sebastian in Basque Country, Spain. They are very proud of their team over there, as well as the pride they have in their origins and the heritage. Well, that’s the way it goes when a football club is more than a team, it’s a nationality.
As a matter of fact, the people of Basque Country have so much pride in themselves, their heritage and their football team, that it took them about 80 years to allow a non-Basque to wear the sacred blue and white. And when one did, he became a legend, his shirt and photo are up there, on the walls of the city of San Sebastian pintxo bars, with shirts and photos of the all the other Real Sociedad greats.
Real Sociedad de Futbol (Royal Society of Football) was founded in 1909 by local Spaniards who crossed the ocean to England for work and studies and then came back. In general, the team didn’t have much success, going up from Second Division to the First, and then relegated again, but it kept true to area pride, where only players of Basque origins could play for it. True success came in the 80’s, when La Real won La Liga titles in 1980-81 and 1981-82.
Over the years, Sociedad has produced excellent lines of young players, that played for the club for few years and went on to bigger, richer clubs. Overall, La Moyesia, the club’s youth academy, has produced such fine football players, that The International Centre for Sports Studies has picked it 6th in the world in terms of football youth academies.
Among others, the academy has produced the likes of Xabi Alonso, the magnificent midfielder, who went on to win the UEFA Champions League with Liverpool and Real Madrid, as well as La Liga title with Real, Bundeliga titles with Bayern Munich and Euro and World Cup with Spain’s national team Luis Arconada, the goalkeeper for Real’s two title winning seasons French striker Antoine Griezmann, who signed for the youth academy at the age of 13 and later moved on for 23.8 million GBP to Atletico Madrid. And there were plenty others, like Xabi Prieto, Txiki Begiristain, Jesús Zamora, José Mari Bakero and Jesús María Satrústegui.
Oh, we should not forget John Aldridge. The Irishman came to San Sebastian in 1989 for 1 million GBP from Liverpool and became the first non-Basque to play for La real. Sociedad had simply no choice left: leading players left the club and the youth academy at the time didn’t produce enough quality players to pick from. So the club looked elsewhere. And Aldridge was not only the first non-Basque, but also the club’s most expensive player ever. It was pressure time, but Aldridge responded, scoring 16 goals in his first season and helping Real finish 5th. In his second season, Aldridge scored 17 and afterwards asked to leave, because his family found life abroad hard. To this day, He is the model by which foreign players are measured by in Basque country.
Sociedad’s all-time appearance leader is Alberto Gorriz, who played in 599 matches between 1979-1993. The all-time top goal scorer is Jesus María Satrustegui, who scored 162 times between 1973-1986.
Real Sociedad play it’s home matches in 25,000-seat Anoeta Stadium. After redevelopment will be done, stadium's capacity should grow to 42,300 seats.
